If you’re a tourist visiting beautiful cities, you know…
About 0.1% of diamonds that have been mined over the years are colored. Unlike the more common transparent diamonds, colored diamonds are rare and highly sought after in the world of luxury jewelry.
The colored diamonds have an obvious body color when viewed in the face-up position. Although all fancy diamonds are valuable as they’re otherwise known, some colors are more desireable than others.
Let’s dive into these.
Colored diamonds occur in various colors such as blue, red, green, orange, pink, purple, brown, and even black. However, their hue, saturation, and tone are not the same. Same as the rarity, red diamonds are the rarest and high in diamonds demand, closely followed by yellow and blue diamonds.
Not only are colored diamonds extremely beautiful and exquisite, but they’re also incredibly rare, which makes them quite expensive. For instance, Quality Red Diamond is currently worth about $8,000000, and the Heart of Eternity, a fancy blue diamond, is said to be worth about $16,000000. And the Hope Diamond, a fancy blue diamond, is worth about $250,000000.
Let’s dive into these.
While pure diamonds are perfectly transparent and have no natural hue, diamonds become colored when they contain some impurities and defects in the structure, giving them that natural hue. The color can range from very light to vivid, but a diamond will only be considered a colored diamond if the color is noticeable.
Diamonds are minerals and rare forms of crystalline carbon. If a diamond were to be composed only of carbon and the crystalline structure would be perfect, then the diamond would be colorless. However, several defects could occur due to the long and hard experience of diamonds with the earth.
Some of these defects could be nitrogen or boron atoms taking the place of the regular carbon atoms within the diamond’s crystal lattice, or small particles of non-diamond elements could also be incorporated into the diamond’s crystal lattice. Also, there could be empty sites within the diamond that were meant to be filled with carbon.
Thus, one or more of these defects produce colored diamonds. Talk about imperfections creating great beauty. This beauty, coupled with their rarity and high consumer interest, has made colored diamonds extremely expensive, so much so that some colored diamonds sell for millions of dollars a carat.
However, some colored diamonds sell for about $80000-$160000 per carat. The prices of these diamonds are not uniform. More wanted colors like red and blue are more expensive and valuable than colors such as light yellow and brown. Thus a red diamond can sell for millions of dollars per carat, while a yellow diamond can sell for thousands of dollars.
However, the price of colored diamonds has more to do with just their hue. The uniform spread of the colors and how deeply the colors have saturated the gem are also very important factors that can increase or decrease the market value. Also, the quality and size of the diamond are quite important.
As already mentioned, colored diamonds are extremely rare, and it’s not easy to come across jewelry made using them. Most of the pieces made with these fancy diamonds are privately owned. However, at Dianoche, you can find any fancy diamond you may be interested in.
