The Milky Myth vs. Reality (The Flaw)
To understand this market, you must stop thinking of lab-grown diamonds as
The primary reason fluorescence gets a bad reputation is the fear of "milkiness." In certain cases,
extremely strong fluorescence can cause a diamond to appear hazy, cloudy, or oily, which dulls its
sparkle.
However, the fear is vastly exaggerated. A comprehensive study conducted by the Gemological Institute of
America (GIA) revealed that for the overwhelming majority of diamonds, fluorescence has no negative
visual impact. In fact, the GIA found that fewer than 0.2% of the fluorescent diamonds submitted to
their laboratories exhibited this hazy or milky effect.
While the statistical risk is incredibly low, our Dianoche experts always advise caution in one specific
area: when dealing with top-tier colorless stones (D, E, and F colors), strong fluorescence must be
evaluated carefully, as the icy effect is not needed and the risk of cloudiness, though rare, is not
worth taking without an expert's eye.
