The "Dough" Method: How to Untangle Stubborn Jewelry Knots Like a Pro

Created: 09 September 2026 8-10 min read Author: Dianoche Team

Step 1: The "Dough" Rolling Technique

The first step to untangling a stubborn knot does not involve pulling at all; it involves rolling.
Find a hard, flat, and well-lit surface (like a glass table or a marble countertop). Unclasp the necklace if possible, and lay the knot flat against the surface. Place your index finger directly on top of the knot, apply a very gentle downward pressure, and begin rolling the knot back and forth in a circular motion—exactly as if you were rolling a tiny piece of dough.
This continuous, gentle friction works magic. It forces the tiny gold links to rub against each other, gradually loosening the tension and creating microscopic gaps within the tightly bound knot without applying any pulling force.

Step 2: The Right Tools (No Fingernails!)

Once the knot feels slightly softer and looser from the rolling technique, resist the urge to use your fingernails to pry it apart. Fingernails are too thick and will only accidentally push the links back together.
Instead, you need two very fine, sharp tools. In our Singapore showroom, we use precision diamond tweezers, but at home, you can use two sewing needles or the sharp ends of two safety pins. Insert the tips of the needles directly into the center of the loosened knot. Gently wiggle the needles apart to widen the gaps, slowly coaxing the loops of the chain out of the tangle one by one.

Step 3: Prevention is Key

The best way to untangle a necklace is to prevent it from knotting in the first place.
If you are traveling or storing your necklaces in a safe, never drop them loosely into a box. A brilliant industry trick is to place the majority of the chain inside a small ziplock bag, but leave the clasp hanging outside the bag before zipping it shut. This prevents the chain from looping back around itself and forming a knot. At home, always try to hang your delicate chains vertically.

The Dianoche Bottom Line: You Make the Rules

While the "Dough" method works for 90% of jewelry tangles, some knots are simply too stubborn or complex to safely undo at home.
If the knot refuses to yield, do not force it. We are here to help. Bring your tangled necklace to our Dianoche showroom in Singapore, and our expert goldsmiths will gladly use our professional tools and microscopes to safely free your favorite piece.
