jewellery. It is a significant emotional and financial investment, and the process behind the scenes can
often feel like a tightly guarded industry secret.
At our Dianoche Atelier, we do not believe in secrets. We believe that crafting your dream ring should
be an open, transparent, and highly educational journey. As direct manufacturers, we handle every single
step of the process. If you have ever wondered exactly how a custom diamond ring goes from a simple
WhatsApp message to a finished masterpiece, here is our complete, unedited, A-to-Z insider’s guide.
Phase 1: The Initial Conversation & Setting the Stage
The journey always begins with a conversation, and today, that usually happens via WhatsApp. A client
will reach out, often sending a reference picture or simply admitting, "I don't know much about
diamonds, but I want to propose".
Our first goal is never to push a sale. It is to build trust, answer your questions patiently, and
understand your specific needs. We ask guiding questions: What color gold does she like? What diamond
shapes has she mentioned?.
Most importantly, we discuss the budget. We establish an estimated budget early on so we can maximize
every dollar. We are completely transparent—if we don’t know the answer to a specific question, we will
investigate and return with accurate information rather than inventing a response.
Phase 2: Sourcing the Perfect Centerpiece
Once the budget is set, we focus on the heart of the ring: the center stone. We provide several
variations (e.g., one slightly larger, one slightly higher quality) that all meet Dianoche’s strict
minimum standards:
- Perfect Cut: No dark "bow-tie" shadows in elongated shapes.
- No "Diseases": We strictly filter out diamonds with "BGM" (Brown, Green, or Milky tints) that ruin a diamond's beauty but aren't always listed on certificates.
- Color Matching: We match the diamond's color grade to your chosen gold. White gold requires a stricter (higher) color grade, while yellow gold allows you to drop the color grade and save money.
The Insider's Secret: Commercial vs. Gemological Grading We teach our clients the
difference between a gemological grade and real-world beauty. For example, a diamond might be graded as
a high "VS" clarity, but if the single inclusion is a black dot right in the center, it is visually
unappealing. Conversely, an "SI" clarity diamond might have a white inclusion hidden on the side, making
it completely "eye-clean" and a much smarter buy.
Phase 3: The 3D Rendering (CAD) & Sizing
With the diamond chosen, we take a standard 1/3 deposit and begin the digital design. (For clients who
are very unsure of their direction, we sometimes provide an initial sketch even before the deposit).
We build a highly accurate 3D model (CAD) of your ring. We adjust the digital skin tone and exact finger
size so you can see realistic proportions. We send this to you, and we go back and forth adjusting
details until you give us your 100% approval.
- The 3D Prongs Warning: In 3D renderings, the prongs holding the diamond always look incredibly bulky and heavy. Do not panic! This is a technical necessity in the digital file; in reality, the master setter will shave these down to be delicate and elegant.
- The Right-to-Left Hand Sizing Secret: Did you know that the fingers on a person's dominant right hand are almost always thicker than the left?. If you are trying to measure her ring size secretly and only have access to a ring she wears on her right hand, do not use that exact measurement!. Our professional rule of thumb is to subtract between 0.75 to 1.00 full size from the right-hand measurement to get a perfect, secure fit for her left hand. For necklaces, we even do "detective work," analyzing photos of your partner to guess her preferred chain length.
Phase 4: Wax Printing & The Ancient Art of Casting
Once you approve the 3D file, we send it to our 3D printers, which create a physical replica of your
ring in special wax.
This wax model goes to the casting house. Here, it is attached to a "Tree of Waxes" alongside other
jewellery pieces. The entire tree is submerged in plaster and heated in a kiln. The wax melts away,
leaving a perfect hollow mold in the plaster. Molten gold is then poured into this mold. Once cooled,
your raw gold ring is cut from the tree's trunk (a piece we call the Ambus), and the raw metal is ready
for the goldsmith.
Phase 5: Goldsmithing & Diamond Setting
At this stage, the gold looks rough. Our master goldsmith cleans the casting, stripping away the outer
layers to reveal the smooth gold beneath.
Next, the ring moves to the Diamond Setter. Depending on your design, the setter will meticulously
secure the stones using classic prongs, a channel setting, or a protective bezel cup.
Phase 6: The Final Finish & The Rhodium Secret
Once set, the ring undergoes its final polish, whether you requested a high-shine or a modern matte
finish.
If your ring is White Gold, there is one final step: Rhodium Plating. Because gold is
naturally yellow, mixing it with white metals still leaves a slight yellowish tint. To achieve that icy,
brilliant white finish, the ring is electroplated in a bath of Rhodium.
Phase 7: Delivery, Paperwork, and The Microscope
When you arrive at the Dianoche Atelier to collect your masterpiece, the experience is fully
transparent.
If you purchased a GIA-certified diamond, we will provide all the paperwork. We even
place the diamond under our in-house microscope so you can personally view the microscopic laser
inscription on the diamond's girdle, matching it to your certificate for absolute peace of mind.
We explain your warranty (we cover the small side stones for a year, though we highly recommend you
insure the main center diamond yourself).
Phase 8: Aftercare & The "New Car" Analogy
Our service does not end when you leave the showroom. We educate every client on a crucial
reality: Gold is a soft metal.
Think of your new ring like driving a brand-new car out of the dealership. If the car takes a hit, the
metal body (the Pach) will dent. Similarly, if your ring takes a hard knock against a table, the gold
can bend, which forces the prongs to open.
We explain your warranty (we cover the small side stones for a year, though we highly recommend you
insure the main center diamond yourself).
How to know if your diamond is loose:
- You notice hair or sweater threads constantly catching on the prongs.
- You tap the ring near your ear and hear a faint "clicking" noise. If this happens, do not panic. Bring it back to us immediately. Tightening a prong is a fast, inexpensive fix that saves your diamond.
