The Insider’s Guide to Gemstone Engagement Rings in Singapore: What You Must Know Before You Buy

1. The Durability Reality: The Mohs Scale

The first thing we discuss with any bespoke client is the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This dictates how well your stone will survive the daily wear and tear of your lifestyle.
  • The Benchmark: A diamond is the hardest mineral on earth, scoring a perfect 10.

  • The Safe Alternatives: Rubies and Sapphires score a solid 9. They are incredibly durable and are always our top recommendation for everyday engagement rings, as it is very rare for them to get damaged.

  • The Fragile Beauties: Emeralds typically range between 7.5 to 8, and semi-precious stones (like Amethyst or Citrine) score even lower. The lower the score, the softer and more prone to scratching, chipping, and breaking the stone becomes over the years.

2. The Architectural Solution: Protective Settings

If you fall in love with a softer gemstone, you must engineer the ring to protect it. Because a large center stone sits high on the finger, it is highly exposed to physical impact.
At Dianoche, if a client chooses a softer stone, we strongly recommend a closed or protective setting. Instead of exposed prongs, we might design a "bezel" setting (where a cup of gold wraps around the stone's edge) or surround it with a diamond halo. This ensures the gold or the diamonds take the impact, not the fragile gemstone. (Insider tip: If you are choosing a highly affordable semi-precious stone like Citrine, we sometimes recommend simply buying a "spare" backup stone just in case!)

3. The "Heavy Cut" Secret: Why Gems Look Different

Clients often wonder why a 2-carat Sapphire looks smaller or bulkier than a 2-carat Diamond. The answer is in the cutting technique.
To maximize light return, diamonds are cut with minimalistic precision. Gemstones, however, are cut to maximize color . This means gem cutters often leave the stone much heavier, with a thicker "girdle" (the middle band of the stone) or a deeper belly. If a gem is cut too flat to look bigger, the color will simply "leak" out of the bottom, creating a clear, dead space known as a window. Therefore, a premium gemstone will often have a heavier, bulkier profile than a diamond.

4. The Value Trap: Origin vs. Beauty

Unlike diamonds, where a strict grading report dictates the price, gemstone pricing is heavily influenced by geography.
For example, a Ruby mined in Burma (Myanmar) commands a massive price premium over a Ruby mined in Mozambique, simply because of its historical origin. However, a Mozambique Ruby can be just as breathtakingly beautiful, and sometimes even more so!
Our advice? Unless you are buying strictly for investment purposes, do not pay the "origin premium." Choose the stone with the color, hue, and shape that you genuinely love.

5. The Hidden Dangers: Resizing and Cleaning

Finally, owning a gemstone ring requires two strict lifestyle rules:
  • Skip the Ultrasonic Cleaner: While ultrasonic baths and steamers are fantastic for diamonds, the intense vibrations and heat can easily shatter softer, heavily included gemstones. Except for high-quality Rubies and Sapphires, most gems must be cleaned gently by hand.

  • Get the Ring Size Right the First Time: Resizing a gemstone ring is incredibly risky. The heat from the jeweler's torch during a resize can cause the gemstone to explode. Often, the jeweler must completely un-set the stone, resize the gold, and reset it—which increases the risk of damage. When planning a proposal, try your absolute hardest to get the ring size accurate to the half-millimeter to avoid future structural risks.

The Dianoche Bottom Line

Choosing a gemstone allows you to create a ring that is truly one-of-a-kind. With the right stone selection, a protective setting, and expert craftsmanship, your colorful investment will last a lifetime.
