The Hook When browsing for an engagement ring or loose stones, you might notice a mysterious specification on the grading report:diamond fluorescence. Many clients visiting our showroom at 29 Kreta Ayer Road ask us, "is diamond fluorescence good or bad?" and "does diamond fluorescence affect value?".
Fluorescence is simply the visible light some diamonds emit when exposed to invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, it is one of the most misunderstood aspects of buying a diamond. At Dianoche, we don't just rely on the certificate—we test how the diamond actually behaves in real life and how it affects your wallet. Because we have different philosophies on value, this topic always sparks a great debate between the three of us.

The Dianoche Office Debate: The Hunter vs. The Conservative

Gilad (Chief Gemologist): "The Strict Quality Filter" “Let's start with the GIA diamond fluorescence scale, which grades this effect as None, Faint, Medium, Strong, or Very Strong. When comparing a none vs faint fluorescence diamond, there is practically zero visual difference. However, I am extremely strict when a stone hits the higher end of the scale. A strong fluorescence diamond can sometimes look milky, hazy, or 'oily' in natural sunlight. If it compromises the crystal transparency even slightly, I reject it. But if it is 100% crystal clear, I pass it to Tal and Elad to argue over the investment value.”
Tal: "The Strategic Hunter" “I actually believe we should actively hunt for these clear fluorescent stones! It is an incredibly smart strategy to intentionally look for diamonds with a warmer colour grade (like an I or J) that possess Medium or Strong Blue fluorescence. The blue glow naturally cancels out the yellow tint, making the diamond look significantly whiter face-up when set in a ring. Because the global market generally misunderstands this, there is a massive diamond fluorescence price discount. You get a gorgeous, white-looking, larger stone for a fraction of the price.”
Elad: "The Conservative Investor" “Tal's strategy is great for maximizing a budget today, but my job is to look at your future value. If a client tells me they might want to upgrade their diamond in a few years or sell it, my advice is strictly conservative: buy a diamond with 'None' fluorescence. The second-hand diamond market heavily penalizes fluorescent stones. If you want to protect your future trade-in value and ensure maximum liquidity, it is much safer to avoid fluorescence entirely, even if it means buying a slightly smaller stone today.”
The Field Truth (Real Experience from our Studio): Just last month, a couple came in to buy diamond with fluorescence singapore after reading about it online. They wanted a large stone but were on a strict budget. Since they told Elad they had absolutely no intention of ever upgrading or selling the ring, we went with Tal's strategy. We actively sourced a beautifully cut 'J' colour diamond with Strong Blue fluorescence that passed Gilad's strict transparency test. In the Singapore sunlight, it faced up as white as an 'H' colour, saving them thousands of dollars while avoiding the resale market penalties Elad warned about.
The Bottom Line: Should You Buy It? So, does it affect value? Yes, it lowers the price today, but it also lowers the resale value tomorrow.
To make the smartest purchase, keep these golden rules in mind:
  • Never buy a strong fluorescence diamond blind: You must have a trusted gemologist verify that the stone is not milky.

  • Buy for the present: If you want the biggest, whitest-looking stone for your current budget and never plan to sell, actively look for a warmer colour with blue fluorescence.

  • Buy for the future: If you think you will upgrade your ring in the future, play it safe and stick to 'None' fluorescence to protect your investment.
