Why Is My White Gold Ring Turning Yellow? The Truth About Rhodium Plating

Updated:11 June 2026 8-10 min read Author: Dianoche Team
The Hook Every month at our Dianoche Artelier on Kreta Ayer Road, we see clients walk in with a look of panic. Their beautiful white gold engagement ring has started to show a dull, yellowish tint. The immediate fear is always the same: "Did I buy a fake ring? Was I scammed with cheap metal?" Take a deep breath. Your ring is absolutely fine, and it is not fake. The yellowing of white gold is a completely natural, scientific process. Here is the insider truth about why your white gold ring is turning yellow, and how easily we can restore its day-one brilliance.

The Science of White Gold (The Electroplating Secret)

The first thing you need to know is that pure gold is naturally, intensely yellow. To create "white" gold, jewelers mix (alloy) pure yellow gold with white metals such as silver and palladium. However, no matter how much white metal you mix in, the final base material will always retain a slight yellowish-grey tint. To achieve that brilliant, mirror-like white finish that everyone loves, the jewelry goes through an electroplating process using a precious, highly reflective metal called Rhodium.
What you are actually seeing when your ring turns "yellow" is simply the microscopic rhodium plating naturally wearing off, revealing the true, slightly warm color of the white gold underneath.

The 18K vs. 14K Contrast

Here is a manufacturing secret that explains why some rings look yellower than others. In Singapore, 18K gold is the standard for luxury jewelry. However, 18K gold contains 75% pure (yellow) gold, whereas 14K gold contains only 58.5% pure gold.
Because 18K has a much higher concentration of pure yellow gold, its natural base color is significantly more yellowish than 14K. Therefore, when the rhodium plating eventually fades on an 18K ring, the visual contrast is much sharper and easier to notice.

Daily Wear in Singapore: Don't Stop Wearing Your Ring!

You will likely notice that the yellowing almost always starts at the bottom of the ring band (the shank). This is the most active area of the ring, experiencing constant friction against door handles, steering wheels, and your own fingers. In Singapore's environment, the daily use of hand sanitizers, frequent hand washing, cosmetics, and our natural humidity naturally accelerate how fast this plating wears off.
But here is our official Dianoche philosophy: Jewelry is meant to be worn.
Do not restrict yourself or leave your beautiful diamond ring in a box just to protect the plating! Fading is a perfectly normal part of owning fine jewelry, and the solution is incredibly simple and routine.

The Warning: The "Fake White Gold" Trick

While normal fading to a slight yellowish-grey is expected, we must warn you about a deceptive practice we sometimes encounter in the market.
Occasionally, clients bring us rings that yellowed extremely fast and revealed a bright, deep yellow underneath. Unfortunately, some unscrupulous sellers take standard yellow gold rings and simply rhodium-plate them to sell as "white gold." When this plating wears off, the bright yellow underneath is glaring and obvious. At Dianoche, we guarantee full transparency—our white gold is true, alloyed white gold.
