Naturally colored diamonds are so rare that the ratio between them and white diamonds is 10,000 white diamond for every one colorful diamond.
Synthetic or dyed colored diamonds
Colored diamonds can also be produced in lab conditions, whether by coloring natural diamonds or by creating synthetic diamonds from scratch.
The synthetic diamonds are produced in a process that mimics their natural formation in nature.
They are created in the lab in only a few weeks in contrast to the naturally occurring diamonds that are created in nature through thousands of years.
This type of synthetic diamonds is so similar to the natural diamonds in its qualities that they can only be differentiated by advanced lab equipment that can detect the very fine distinctions in the shape of the crystals of the diamond.
The second method of creating colored diamonds in lab conditions is by radiating natural diamonds that have unattractive color.
In this process the diamond is exposed to radiation which changes the localization of atoms inside it and induces the color change.
Synthetic diamonds or dyed diamonds formed in labs are very appealing to the costumer due to their prices and color consistency, they suit every design and make spectacular jewelry, even due their market value is quiet low, and they are not suitable as an investment for future trades.
Enhanced diamonds – due to the great value and rareness of colored diamonds, there are many treated or enhanced diamonds.
Paperwork – make sure you purchase diamonds with invoice in which it is documented that the diamond is natural and not enhanced. For expensive diamonds we recommend to buy with gemological certificate only.
Polishing – with colored diamond as well, it is better not to compromise about the polish of the diamond.
